The American attack on Okinawa was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War during World War II. After a long campaign of island hopping, the U.S. was planning to use Okinawa as a base for air operations for the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands. The battle is infamous for the ferocity of the fighting and the intensity of Japanese kamikaze attacks.

WELCOME:

April 1945: You are in command of the American force invading the island of Okinawa held by the Imperial Japanese Army. Called Operation Iceberg, it was one of the major battles of the Pacific War and the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater of World War II. The object of the game is to completely conquer this large island as quickly as possible in the middle of Japanese Kamikaze attacks against your warships. Japan hoped to make the battle for Okinawa so costly to the American forces that they would not launch an offensive against the Japanese home islands. The Okinawa campaign has been referred as Typhoon of Steel and Violent Wind of Steel because of to the fierceness of the fighting, the intensity of Japanese kamikaze attacks, and the numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

Victory Conditions: Control ALL Victory Points (VPs), which are gained from the cities.

QUICK TIPS: Settings: You can change hexagon size, city icons, unit icons, and many other aspects from settings, or via the four round buttons in the upper-left corner of the gaming view. Unit markings: Lower left corner shows HPs (Hit Points), upper left corner shows the number of MPs (move points), right side has several type of markings: warnings on red, attached resources on white, ground information (what's under unit icon) is marked on green. Zooms buttons (Z) are located on upper-left corner. Battleships provide various supplies to the ground forces. Aircraft carriers refuel Hellcat fighters, which defend naval units against Kamikaze attacks. Hellcat fighters without fuel between turns will crash. Every kamikaze hit against battleships will result in a loss of HPs, which in turn will reduce the amount of resources the battleship supplies. Combat core concepts: adjacent units critically support each other in battle. encircling is often more efficient than using brute-force direct attacks.

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

Player can request various resources via Battleship Request menu. Resource Request is only carried out if the battleship unit has full MPs between turns. Note: Some requests take several turns to be produced. Battleships can also bombard nearby Kamikaze or dugout units.

While Kamikaze attacks did not sunk any of the U.S. aircraft carriers or battleships during the battle of Okinawa, it still was the most costly single battle in U.S. naval history, and the flow of supplies was disturbed from time to time.

Antiaircraft fire (AA fire). Battleships have an AA fire range of 4, while carriers only have limited short range ability to fire at the incoming kamikaze planes (range 2).

Japanese forces defending Okinawa had their best division transferred elsewhere before the invasion, and therefore focused on defending just the southern part of the island, hence only the southern part of the island is shown on the map.

Obviously both the time and area scale of naval and aerial warfare cannot be realistic while having somewhat realistic land combat scale. Compromises and tweaks were made to allow fluent flow of the gaming experience

Please note that there are two different hills: Moving or attacking from lower to higher ground will result MP or combat penalties.

Cliff=Too steep hill (cliff) is indicated by Red line between hexagons, and units cannot pass through it.

Please note that moving uphill will cost extra Move Points.

Some of the newer code mentions 'province', but since this small-scale game does not include actual provinces with borders, this usually implies to hexagons within the range of two from the city.
