July 1944: You are in command of the American III Amphibious Corps, tasked with taking back the control of Guam from the Imperial Japanese Army. In spite of the facts that reefs around Guam limited the landing site options and defenders were well aware of the incoming attack, the U.S. forces boldly landed on two separate beaches. Guam being mere 32 miles in size meant that Japanese Army quickly mobilized their forces for counter attacks to push the U.S. Marines back to the ocean.

Taking place from: 1944-07
Map size: 1600 = 40 x 40
Specials: Japanese forces used a strategy of dispersed, fortified positions across the island, not a centralized defense
Released: 2018-08

WELCOME:

Guam 1944 by Joni Nuutinen is a turn-based strategy game set in the Pacific theater during the Second World War. July 1944: You are in command of the American III Amphibious Corps, tasked with taking back control of Guam from the Imperial Japanese Army, which captured the island in December 1941. Reefs around Guam severely limited the available landing sites, supplies were already strained by unexpectedly long campaigns elsewhere, and the Japanese defenders fully expected the invasion. Even so, US forces landed on two separate beaches around a peninsula. What followed was a brutal opening week, as the small beachheads fought desperately to survive and link up under heavy fire. While Guam is the largest of the Mariana Islands, its small size (a mere 32 miles) meant that the Japanese Army quickly mobilized their forces for a series of counterattacks to push the U.S. Marines back into the ocean.

Japanese General Shigematsu announced: The American enemy is planning a reckless landing on Guam. We have an excellent opportunity to annihilate him on the beaches.

Your challenge is to make the landings, hold the beachheads against the early counterattacks, and steamroll across the island as quickly as possible so that it can be turned into a massive U.S. base for the coming operations in the Pacific campaign.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

The object of the game is to control all the 120 Victory Points as quickly as possible.

QUICK TIPS: Settings: You can change hexagon size, city icons, unit icons, and many other aspects from settings, or via the four round buttons in the upper-left corner of the gaming view. Unit markings: Lower left corner shows HPs (Hit Points), upper left corner shows the number of MPs (move points), right side has several type of markings: warnings on red, attached resources on white, ground information (what's under unit icon) is marked on green. Zooms buttons (Z) are located on upper-left corner. Combat core concepts: adjacent units critically support each other in battle: encircling is often more efficient than using brute-force direct attacks. TMP-system: By controlling Key Tactical Locations (green diamonds) you will gain TMPs (Tactical Move Points), which can be used to move between two hexagons sharing Tactical Route (yellow-green arrow between the hexagons) without losing regular MPs.

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

Victory Condition: Control 120 Victory Points (VPs), which are gained from cities.

Majority of the Japanese resistance should take place both after the landing and at the defense line located at the narrow part of the island.

No US airforce units or airfields, as the physical scale of the island of Guam is so small (player given Air Strike resources instead).

No aerial supply drops to encircled units because Guam is such a physically tiny island.

Unused SBD Dauntless dive bombers strikes expire between turns.

Some slightly incorrect military-history terms (like Fort for minor dugouts) are used simply because they are short (map won't be flooded with long text tags) and these terms are known to even non-native English speakers.
