Situation on 7th of August 1944: British and Canadian troops had tied down elite German formations near Caen while the entire US Third Army had broken through from Normandy to Brittany via Avranches. German HQ saw that by advancing just 30 km (20 miles) from Mortain to Avranches they could cut off the First and Third US Army. The Allies in turn realized that if they could contain this German attempt to take the initiative in Normandy and swing around the American divisions, they might be able to encircle the 7th German Army and the Fifth Panzer Army in the Falaise area, or be themselves cut off.

Taking place from: 1944-08
Map size: 2000 = 50x40 hexagons
Specials: Stop the desperate German Panzer attack to cut off Americans, and encircle Wehrmacht instead. Request resources from Depots.
Released: 2019-04

Situation on 7th of August 1944: British and Canadian troops had tied down elite German formations near Caen while the entire US Third Army had broken through from Normandy to Brittany via Avranches. However, German HQ realized that by advancing just 30 km (20 miles) from Mortain to Avranches they could cut off the First and Third US Army -- as Germans had fortified all the port cities, the Allied supply logistics still relied on Normandy beaches. This was a lot to ask from weary German units, but this was the absolutely last chance to contain the Allied landings in Normandy area, maybe even pushing the Allies back into the ocean, and ultimately change the course of the war. Surely throwing 8 battle-hardened Panzer and WSS Divisions against a small sector of the front line could push it forward a short distance of 30 km? In addition Germans committed all their Luftwaffe reserves into this undertaking, named Operation Lüttich.

The Allies realized that if they could contain this last German attempt to take the initiative in Normandy and swing around the American forces which had broken through, they might be able to encircle the 7th German Army and the Fifth Panzer Army in the Falaise area. The only one thing was sure: At the end of this maneuvering either several German or American armies would be cut off and that side would suffer losses measured in hundreds of thousands of men-the scale so far unprecedented on WWII Western Front.

VICTORY CONDITIONS: Control over 160 Victory Points (VPs) which can be gained from the cities. A total of 170 VPs available in this particular campaign.

CAMPAIGN SPECIFIC FEATURES: Various resources can be requested from Resource Depots (located on the top of the map west of Caen). During the Nighttime turn the Allies have limited movement and no aerial strikes, while Germans have almost full movement.

QUICK TIPS: Settings: You can change hexagon size, city icons, unit icons, and many other aspects from settings, or via the four round buttons in the upper-left corner of the gaming view. Unit markings: Lower left corner shows HPs (Hit Points), upper left corner shows the number of MPs (move points), right side has several type of markings: warnings on red, attached resources on white, ground information (what's under unit icon) is marked on green. Zooms buttons (Z) are located on upper-left corner. Combat core concepts: adjacent units critically support each other in battle: encircling is often more efficient than using brute-force direct attacks..

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

— Victory Conditions: Control over 160 Victory Points (VPs) which can be gained from the cities. A total of 170 VPs available in this particular campaign.

— Player can request various resources and HP replacements from Resource Depots (green diamonds), located west of Caen.

— US Divisions which have advanced to Brittany will emerge as reinforcements to the southern part of the in-play map.

— The Allies had limited movement during the night turn (every fourth turn), while Germans are slowed down by the Allied aerial strikes during the 3 day turns.

— Several Germans units had suffered heavy losses during the two months of fighting prior to Falaise operations, this is factored in as a lower German replacements, some lost HPs, and overall weaker German units.

— UK Tank replacements can only be assigned to UK tank unit, not to Canadian Tank unit. Similarly US tank replacements cannot be assigned to French or Polish tank units.

— Unused Night MPs and B17 strikes and Mustang recon flights expire between turns.

— British XXX Corps has not been excluded to keep the number of HQ units tolerable.

— There is a setting to switch how the HQ units are named (either Corps or Generals).

— Some slightly incorrect military-history terms (like Fort for minor dugouts) are used simply because they are short (map won't be flooded with long text tags) and these terms are known to even non-native English speakers.
