Axis Balkan Campaign by Joni Nuutinen takes place on in Yugoslavia and Greece in 1941. Germany, preparing for Operation Barbarossa, needs to bail out struggling Italian forces and secure problematic southern sector in the rear area of the Eastern Front so that the Western Allies cannot threaten crucial Romanian oilfields or launch disruptive counterattack from Greece. In the middle of planning for the Greek operation, a coup in Yugoslavia removes them from the Axis Powers, delivering a huge blow to the prestige of Germany. As a result, Operation 25 (invasion of Yugoslavia) and Operation Marita (invasion of Greece) must be carried out in quadruple hurry: German divisions are still moving to staging area when the offensive is launched, The Yugoslav army is gearing up their huge number of divisions, the Western Allies might send more troops to Greece if there are delays, and German forces need time to prepare for their attack against the Soviet Union. So it is paramount that the victory is quick and decisive. On the plus side, enthusiastic but not always cut-throat Italian and Hungarian forces will later on join the German offensive with fresh forces, while some Italian armies are already in Albania in a stalemate skirmish with Greece forces.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

Aim of the campaign is to control all the Victory Points (cities).

QUICK TIPS: Settings: You can change hexagon size, city icons, unit icons, and many other aspects from settings, or via the four round buttons in the upper-left corner of the gaming view. Unit markings: Lower left corner shows HPs (Hit Points), upper left corner shows the number of MPs (move points), right side has several type of markings: warnings on red, attached resources on white, ground information (what's under unit icon) is marked on green. Zooms buttons (Z) are located on upper-left corner. TMP-system: By controlling Key Tactical Locations (green diamonds) you will gain TMPs (Tactical Move Points), which can be used to move between two hexagons sharing Tactical Route (yellow-green arrow between the hexagons) without losing regular MPs. Combat core concepts: adjacent units critically support each other in battle: encircling is often more efficient than using brute-force direct attacks.

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

Victory Conditions: Control all the Victory Points (VPs), which are gained from the cities.

Map has been tilted right and slightly stretched to make as much of the area active play area as possible.

To keep this ground-based (non-naval) campaign logical and accessible there are two land routes to Peloponnese peninsula.

To make the campaign has some resistance to player the mobilization of Royal Yugoslav Army is assumed successful, all the units which were historically beginning to group are assigned randomized HP between 2-6.

Most units are at divisional level, weaker Axis units (Italians, Hungarians) are handled at Corps level to keep the number of unit on middle sized-map tolerable. For the reasons of keeping the number of unit types manageable some lesser AI units have been bombarded to Divisional level (but with reduced HPs).

Albanian southern border, which is only handful of hexagons on this map, had nearly 20 Italian and Greek divisions on it, as Italians units are Corps sized but Greek units are not, some of the Greek division level units are pulled from this front to face German offensive (to make sense of the unit size differences and to react in a way which was requested by the Western Allies).

Most Italian formations are already in play but start with negative MPs, couple of Italians units arrive later as reinforcements.

For the sake of balance of the campaign couple of Allied units which were about to be transported to Greece are included in the campaign.

Why aren't Italian and Hungarian troops passive a longer period of time. In the test games that proved to be both very boring, and given all the variation, could in extreme cases result in a situation where Greek units would attack Albania after getting a local superiority, but Italians could not move so they would be massacred.

There are no roads available at this campaign since the size of the map is relatively small and Generals can give extra move points, making it very quick to travel through the map, as evident by the quick victories on Hall of Fame. This is especially true on scenario like Balkan, where player attacks from multiple directions.
