WELCOME:

Paris 44: Uprising and Liberation is a turn based strategy game set on the WWII western front. The uprising has begun. Drive your armored spearheads into Paris, eliminate enemy strongholds, and secure the capital before German forces moving along the south and the north flank re-enter the fight.

Historical Background: After the Falaise Gap closed, the Americans and British made the firm decision to bypass Paris, fearing a drawn-out urban battle like Stalingrad. Paris also demanded 4,000 tons of supplies daily, capturing it could stall the Allied advance toward the Rhine. However, on August 19th, an insurrection erupted in Paris. For days, chaotic negotiations and fleeting ceasefires unfolded as both sides tested each other’s strength. The Germans struggled to determine whether the resistance had weapons for 1,000 fighters or 100,000. The French, in turn, feared the Germans might still be able to deploy front-line reinforcements into the city. On the 22nd, both sides reached a grim consensus: there would be no truce. As the Resistance built hundreds of barricades, German forces entrenched themselves in a handful of strongholds, waiting for Panzergrenadier reinforcements to crush the uprising. The Resistance hoped their defiance would force Eisenhower’s hand, and with de Gaulle applying political pressure, the Allies finally relented. On August 23rd, French and American tanks began a frantic push toward the capital.

Now, the race is on: Can Germany deploy armored reinforcements in time to crush the insurrection? Or will the Allies break through first, liberating Paris before the uprising collapses or the fight bogs down into a months-long battle of urban attrition?

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

Victory Conditions: Control OVER 100 Victory Points (VPs) which can be gained from the cities. Since the city of Paris contains over 40 VPs, it is the quickest way to achieve the victory. A total of 130 VPs are available in this particular campaign.

The U.S. 5th Infantry Division and the U.S. 7th Armored Division operated south of Paris, barely entering the area depicted in this game. However, since both formations were forbidden to advance north toward Paris, they are largely excluded from this campaign. The few included units of the 5th Infantry Division will lose Movement Points (MPs) the farther north they move. Additionally, these units are marked with a 5 identifier and have slightly faded colors compared to the active 4th U.S. Infantry Division.

Special Movement: French Regular Infantry and 4th US Infantry Division will get +1 MP from time to time to reflect the level of high Allied motorization. IN OPPOSITE, the US 5th Infantry Division (5th US ID) will gain less than normal number of MPs (especially if these units move north), since that division was ordered not to advance north towards Paris.

FFI = French Forces of Interior. Tens of thousands of French partisans in and around Paris, armed with limited rifles, grenades, and captured weapons. Made up of former military personnel, leftist and Gaullist resistance groups, students, workers, and ex-gendarmes.

Burnt-in markers on unit icons: WHITE 'F' marks French 2nd Armored. 'AT/ATG' indicates Antitank unit. 'M3' highlights M3 Stuart tank (more light recon) unit. '5' tags 5th US Infantry Division, which is in a more passive role and gets less move points than 4th US Infantry Division. 'AUX/LUFT/L' brands the lower quality not-front-duty formations. 'FFI' shortens French Forces of Interior AKA French Resistance. 'MIL' marks Vichy Militia type units.

SOE One-Shot Kit resources [SK tag on unit] arrive each night. It can only be assigned to FFI unit, giving a bonus in the next combat (attack or defense, expires after one usage).

Aerial striking of German units located the city of Paris is not allowed (bombardment resource). Applies to both sides. The limitation is shown with a red circle when Air Strike resource is selected.

Yellow tint on some hexagons represents fields to break the excess evenness of the map. This type of hexagon provides no function and functions like a clear hexagon.

The German fortification ring around Paris was in the early stages of construction, so many dugouts of the defense ring start with zero or one HP, and slowly increase, increasing the pressure to advance towards Paris more quickly.

Historical background: These are the last days of the Falaise Gap. Germans are in withdrawal, plus the Allied aerial superiority plus resistance movement are slowing down Germany Army troop movements in the rear. Just as both the Allies and Germans make the strategic decision to try to reach the river Rhine, the Paris uprising throws a wrench into these plans. Americans and British do not want to end up in a Stalingrad-like battle in a massive city, plus supplying the Paris was a massive drain to the side that was holding it. But, once the 'brave' uprising began, it forced the Allied hand. It's hard to say how many German commanders even wanted to move their best (badly battered) troops into Paris, when setting up a defensive line on the river Rhine clearly was the utmost operational action to achieve. In any case, the Allied aerial control of roads and French Resistance exploding railway lines made it impossible to move a division into Paris before the French 2nd Armored and the US 4th division knocked out the German strongholds in the city. After that, the Germans simply put all their energy into pulling back behind the river Rhine, leaving Paris behind. So, speed was of an issue! Had the Allied spearhead not reached Paris so fast and eliminated German strongholds, Germans might have been forced, just like the Allies, to move entire divisions there. The battle of Caen, that was supposed to last one single day but lasted 60 and only ended after WSS units pulled back, demonstrated that rooting out fanatical German units out of a major city was daunting.

Unused Night MPs and P47 strikes and Mustang recon flights expire between turns. If you notice you are regularly not using them, just disable them from the settings.

If you want to make this campaign significantly longer, more difficult, and include more units, consider enabling the remnants of both the Panzer Lehr and 116th Panzer Division, turning on Full Initial HPs for German units, and flipping on the Control All VPs to Win option.

TIPS: Well, what is a good advice depends heavily on your style of play, but using the Colonels in Paris area to strengthen the dugouts will give you a much more stable framework to try to operate in the city, where sudden loss of a supply city can be disastrous. Do not decimate your tank units trying to bruteforce through a German stronghold with antitank units. Since you only need OVER 100 Victory Points to win, you can basically ignore the northern and eastern edge which contains 20 VPs, meaning, you do not have to massively advance on every direction.
