WELCOME:
Leros: Last German Para Drop by Joni Nuutinen is a turn-based strategy game set on the Greek island of Leros on the Aegean Sea near Turkey.
After the Italians flipped sides, the British rushed everyone from regular troops to their most experienced special forces (the Long Range Desert Group and the SAS/Special Boat Service) to Leros to secure its key deep-water port and huge Italian naval and aerial facilities.
Germans had to seize control of this key stronghold, now held by both the Brits and the Italian garrison, and launched Operation Leopard. The only chance for victory was to audaciously parachute in the famous Fallschirmjäger (German airborne troops) in the middle of the narrowest spot of the island while also carrying out several amphibious landings with the help of Brandenburg special forces and German marine commandos.
Thanks to the irregular shape of the rugged islands (including nine bays), paratroop drops, and multiple landings, a chaotic, cutthroat battle soon blazed between mountains and fortifications as various elite forces wrestled for the control of every inch.
As the hours passed and turned into days without a break in the fierce fighting, both sides realized it was going to be a very close call.
VICTORY CONDITIONS:
The object of the game is to control OVER 100 Victory Points as quickly as possible. A total of 110 VPs are in play.
QUICK TIPS: Settings: You can change hexagon size, city icons, unit icons, and many other aspects from settings, or via the four round buttons in the upper-left corner of the gaming view. Unit markings: Lower left corner shows HPs (Hit Points), upper left corner shows the number of MPs (move points), right side has several type of markings: warnings on red, attached resources on white, ground information (what's under unit icon) is marked on green. Zooms buttons (Z) are located on upper-left corner. Combat core concepts: adjacent units critically support each other in battle: encircling is often more efficient than using brute-force direct attacks. TMP-system: By controlling Key Tactical Locations (green diamonds) you will gain TMPs (Tactical Move Points), which can be used to move between two hexagons sharing Tactical Route (yellow-green arrow between the hexagons) without losing regular MPs.
CAMPAIGN NOTES:
Victory Conditions: Control over 100 Victory Points (VPs), which are gained from the cities. 110 total Victory Points available in the campaign. Please note that the westmost areas do not have many victory points, so deploying a handful of units to seize 1 VP cities is generally not worth it.
Stuka Strike resource can either be used as: Tap own hexagon to drop a small supply depot (exact location varies), tap enemy unit to bombard it, or tap unseen enemy area to recon it. Strikes are not available near nighttime.
Control of the closest city has a major effect into whether supply ships or combat units in water hexagons get barraged by the enemy and how big the damage is. So sailing past enemy controlled cities is not recommended.
Supply: All the supply to the player comes via supply depots. Zero HP combat units do not consume supply, and 1 HP combat units might consume supply. Generals do not consume supply. Stuka Strike can drop few supplies if you tap an own land hexagon.
There is a very limited number of naval vessels present. Please note that you can use the Stuka Strikes to target Italian ships. The British naval commanders decided not to be active near Leros at the time of the battle after losing several destroyers to Stuka strikes.
Tip: Since you know that the airborne drop is coming soon, you can request a few mines via generals in advance to help out with the chaotic parachute zone.
Why are almost all naval battles and British ships excluded? Most naval combat took place long before the landings happened and long distance away from the island itself. As Germans advanced in their island-hopping campaign, they set up Stuka bases, which quickly sank so many British destroyers that the British admiralty blocked all calls by Churchill to be more active in and around Leros at the time when Germans attacked. The last British supply runs and evacuations were mostly carried out with submarines or with very small vessels during the night.
The quickly repulsed early German landing attempt on the West coast is excluded, as these troops were redirected to the other side of the island, and their presence there is a crucial part of the campaign.
Reinforcements: Germans had many reinforcement units in theory, but in reality many companies were either tied down to other islands, sunk during transport in the months leading to the battle of Leros, or simply had suffered casualties in the earlier battles as Germans retook control of the Italian islands after Italy tried to pull out of the war.
Map gets darkened if the hour is 20, you are also less likely to have Stuka strikes available.
The battle of Leros included an unprecedented number of different special forces fighting in such a contained place. Italians had their MAS, the British threw in their most experienced members of the Long Range Desert Group and SAS/SBS (Special Boat Service), while the Germans deployed Marine Commandos, the remaining parachute veterans, and various Brandenburg companies, infamous for their multi-language, multi-uniform tactics that confused their opponents.
Since Germans, British, and Italians threw in their best, most experienced special forces into this crucial battle, you might wonder, where are the Americans? The U.S. view was that the quickest way to end the Second World War was to put all the focus on beating the main targets of the main opponents. This definitely meant not getting involved in trying to wrestle for the control of the thousands of islands on the Aegean Sea.
