In February 1945, the American Marine force planned to seize the small volcano island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army, hoping the operation would last only couple of days, but the ensuing 5-week battle saw some of the fiercest fighting of the Pacific War. The island became globally famous when AP photographer Joe Rosenthal published his photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, taken on Mount Suribachi.

WELCOME:

You are in command of the American Marine force seizing the island of Iwo Jima on February 19th, 1945 (Operation Detachment). The object of the game is to completely conquer this small and inhospitable island as quickly as possible to both prevent the Japanese from using it to detect American bomber fleets, and to provide an emergency landing area for US planes.

This tiny volcanic island has been under heavy bombardment for months, and American submarines have sunk most of the Japanese supplies and reinforcements, so this is going to be the easiest and quickest mission yet!

...unless the Japanese have fortified the entire island, dug over 10 miles of tunnels, located troops in the thousands of caves, built platforms to move their artillery underground after firing, and prepared to die to the last man.

VICTORY CONDITIONS:

The game is over once Americans control every single town, village and cave on the island.

CAMPAIGN SPECIFIC FEATURES:

Caves: Certain cities will lead your infantry units into caves where you have to fight Japanese units. You can exit from a cave by moving the unit back to the hexagon you entered the cave from. Battleships: You can request resources like mortars or flamethrowers from warships OR use them to fire on nearby ground targets (in which case they won't deliver the requested item between this turn and the next). Similarly, moving warships so that they lose their move points (MPs) will stop the delivery of the requested resources.

CAMPAIGN NOTES:

Victory Conditions: Control all Victory Points (VPs), which are gained from the cities.

Caves: Certain cities will lead your infantry units into caves where you have to fight Japanese units. You can exit from a cave by moving the unit back to the hexagon you entered the cave to.

Notice: You can exit from a cave by moving back to the hexagon you entered to.

Please note that moving uphill will cost extra Move Points. There are two different hills: Moving or attacking from lower to higher ground will result MP or combat penalties.

Cliff=Too steep hill (cliff) is indicated by Red line between hexagons, and units cannot pass through it.

Battleships: You can request resources like Mortars or Flamethrowers from warships OR use them to fire nearby ground targets (in which case they won't deliver the requested item between this turn and the next). Similarly moving warships so that it loses its move points (MPs) will stop the delivery of the requested resources.

Icon direction: In the latest versions most units, except Marines, are facing in such a way that they make sense during the latter stages of the campaign but during initial landing units are facing away from each other (when using REAL icon set).

MOVE-COSTS: Moving via a road costs 1 MP (both hexagons must have road), any other movement costs 2 MPs. Going uphill costs 1 extra MP, except for a tank unit which loses 2 extra MPs. Using Tactical movement routes (hexagons connected by yellow-green arrows) costs 1 regular MP LESS but you lose 1 Tactical MP (TMP). Movement cost can never be less than 1 MP.

Some of the newer code mentions 'province', but since this small-scale game does not include actual provinces with borders, this usually implies to hexagons within the range of two from the city.
